SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Diablos fell victim to R-D's power in last year's semifinals. Are they in store for more of the same punishment in Season Nine?
Yes, if Game One is any indication. Barry Bonds hit the tie-breaking homer in the seventh and Mark Prior and the Bull 'pen scattered 12 hits as R-D took Game One 4-2 at Blo Hole.
The Bulls, who took care of Dymek's Devil's in six games in last year's playoffs, built an early 2-0 lead in this one, only to see San Antonio pull even with a run in the fourth and another in the sixth. With the 'Blos racking up numerous hits, Andrew E. was lucky not to have given up five or six runs, but a twin-killing and clutch pitching kept it close.
With the game suddenly tied opening the seventh, Bonds decided he preferred playing with a lead, and he took Bartolo Colon over the right-center field wall to give the Bulls a 3-2 lead. R-D quickly added another when A-Rod singled and came around on a Carlos Delgado two-bagger.
San Antonio threatened in the seventh before Ugie Urbina coaxed an inning-ending double play, and Urbina and Jason Isringhausen put the 'Blos away without any further trouble.

Pitching. Fielding. Base-running. Many things can make or break a team in a tight playoff game, and here's another one: Throwing out runners at the plate.
San Antonio did in twice in Game Two -- the second one ending the game with Cliff Floyd trying to score the tying run -- as the Diablos escaped with a 2-1 in to even this series at a game apiece.
Falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Bulls first fell victim to San Antonio's outfield arms in the fifth. That's when the speedy Marlon Byrd was cut down at the plate while attemping to score on Mike Lieberthal's single, Einar Diaz making a spectacular play to corral Manny Ramirez's slightly off-line throw before lunging to nip the sliding Byrd.
It was even more painful for Andrew E. and his lads in the ninth. Trailing 2-0, the Bulls got something going with two away when Bryd doubled and then trotted home on Floyd's pinch double to the right-field corner. In his second inning of work, Diablo closer John Smoltz was in serious trouble, and it deepened when Lieberthal clubbed a line-shot single to left.
But Brian Jordan, in as a defensive replacement for Ramirez, came up throwing and nailed Floyd with a perfect strike, leaving R-D a hair shy of tying the ballgame.
Wilson Alvarez, an afterthought in the Season Nine draft before going an awesome 19-8 in the regular season, tossed seven-plus innings of scoreless ball to get the win for the Diablos.

Raleigh-Durham used its trademark long ball for all three runs, Vlad Guerrero hitting a pair of solo homers and Barry Bonds hitting another.
Despite mustering few hits, San Antonio did walk six times and had its opportunities to do damage. The Diablos lost one potential run in the fifth when Marlon Byrd gunned down Matt Morris as he tried to score on Jose Vidro's single. The Diablos had another glorious opportunity the next inning with runners on second and third and one away, but Ugie Urbina got Andruw Jones on strikes before getting Einar Diaz to ground out for the final out.
Down 2-1, Dymek sends his shaky fourth starter, Jeremi Gonzalez, to the hill in Game Four against the Bulls' Kip Wells.

Problem: San Antonio has done very little hitting itself, and as a result Dymek's Devils find themselves down three games to one.
Having scored just five runs in the first three games, San Antonio remained in the offensive doldrums in Game Four, losing 3-1 to the Bulls and stingy starter Kip Wells, who worked seven strong innings for the win.
Trailing 1-0, Raleigh-Durham knotted the score bottom three on Vlad Guerrero's two-out ribbie single. The Bulls then went ahead for good the next inning on Marlon Byrd's run-scoring double.
Wells gave up just five hits in his seven innings, and relievers Frankie Rodriguez and Jason Isringhausen held the Diablos scoreless over the final two innings to lock up the win for Andrew E.

And as a result, Dymek's Devils are out of the playoffs.
Colon walked two, balked twice, and gave up two key hits during a four-run R-D uprising in the sixth, a rally that propelled the Bulls to a 7-4 win at the Bullpen. The loss eliminated the Diablos from this semifinals series in five games. It is the second consecutive season in which Raleigh- Durham has eliminated San Antonio in the ABA semis.
Colon and the Diablos were looking good as they took a 3-2 into the sixth. But things went suddenly south, Colon doing more than his share to send them there. Barry Bonds led off with a single, and Colon then issued free passes to A-Rod and Delgado to load the sacks for Vlad Guerrero. Continuing his meltdown, Bartolo balked, sending Bonds home with the tying run. A Guerrero sac fly plated the lead run and Colon, after balking a second time, yielded a ribbie triple to Dmitri Young as the Bulls poured it on.
Mark Prior scored his second win of the series for R-D, which will face the winner of the Miami-Alberta series in the ABA Finals.
