SAN JOSE -- Welcome to the playoffs, Hammers.
Eshbaugh's San Jose club -- in the postseason for the first time after eight years of futility -- met the all-time ABA playoff pitcher in Game One. And the result was predictable. Pedro Martinez tossed a complete-game three-hitter as Miami whipped the Hammers 9-1 at the Lumber Yard, going up 1-0 in this wild-card series.
The Hammers did scratch for a run in the second to knot the score at 1-1. But it was all Miami after that as the Wave pounded Barry Zito and Chris Capuano for three in the fourth, two in the eighth, and three more in the ninth.
Morgan Ensberg, Larry Walker, and Gary Sheffield all went long for the Wave, which will send Curt Schilling against Carlos Zambrano in Game Two.
Pedro, who went a sick 19-2 in the regular season, was at his best in this one. The Wave ace whiffed only one, but the Hammers got just three hits and three walks and never threatened after scoring in the second.

Things looked bleak for the Hammers as they came to hit bottom nine, trailing 2-1. But with one away, Ordonez took Rheal Cormier into the right-field bleachers, and the game was suddenly tied.
With Will Cunane and Danny Kolb taking care of the Wave hitters in the 10th and 11th, Ordonez got busy again bottom 11, leading off with a double off Paul Quantrill. Jorge Posada followed with a base hit to left that appeared to reach left-fielder Eric Brynes too quickly for Mags to score. But Byrnes kicked the rock away, and Ordonez trotted home to send the San Jose crowd into a frenzy.
The series now moves to Miami, where Darrell May and Hideo Nomo will hook up in a crucial Game Three.

The Hammers, making a franchise-first postseason appearance, are now just a win away from advancing to the ABA semifinals.
Starting the game with a walk, Redman scored the contest's first run in the opening frame, and he was at it again in the third, walking and coming around to score to give San Jose a 3-1 lead. In this fifth, the fleet Hammers center-fielder blasted one over Larry Walker's head and wheeled all the way around the bases, just beating the relay throw and I-Rod's tag.
Ahead 7-1, the Hammers appeared to be on their way to an easy win. Miami had other ideas. The Wave put up two in the fifth and two in the sixth, and when Chipper Jones drove home Rodriquez with a big two-hit in the 7th, it was a one-run game.
But the Hammer bullpen came through when it needed to. Bronson Arroyo got Nomar Garciaparra to end the rally in the seventh, and Will Cunnane and closer Danny Kolb closed out Miami the rest of the way to end it. San Jose got the final out when Jorge Posada gunned down Steve Finley attempting to steal second with two away in the ninth.
San Jose goes for the series clincher in Game Four with hopes of avoiding the ugly prospect of facing Pedro Martinez in a fifth and deciding game.

Unheralded Zach Day gave up just three hits and one run over seven innings to lead Miami to a tight 2-1 win in Game Four, forcing the series back to San Jose for one more game. Day walked seven, but the Hammers were unable to get the timely hit to cash in on numerous opportunities.
"I would have given my left nut for someone to come through in one of those two-on, two-out situations," a frustrated Eshbaugh complained afterwards. "Well, we're gonna have to get a big game from Zito tomorrow and see if we can beat Pedro."
With the ballgame tied 1-1 through six, Miami got the winner in the seventh on Steve Finley's solo homer off Hammer starter Freddy Garcia. Shigetoshi Hasegawa and Rheal Cormier made it stand up with two frames of hitless relief.
Barry Zito, the Game One loser, will duel with Martinez in the Lumber Yard as the Wave and Hammers battle for the right to advance to the semifinals.

But they lost.
Chipper Jones' homer broke the tie in the top of the 10th, and a San Jose rally in the bottom half came up a hair shy as Miami eked out an 8-7 victory to claim the series and advance to a semifinals series with defending champion Alberta.
The Wave led 6-1 after 6 1/2 innings of play despite losing starter Martinez in the fourth to an injury. Things looked extremely bleak for Eshbaugh's Elite, but the Hammers teed off against Paul Quantrill bottom seven to pull even. Magglio Ordonez and Frank Thomas both went long in the rally as the Hammers went into the late and extra innings with a head of steam.
Jones, a chronic underachiever in the regular season, sent a hush through the Lumber Yard crowd when he took Jose Acevedo deep leading off the 10th for Junior Burt. Miami went on to add what would prove to be a crucial insurance run when Nomar Garciaparra scored on a wild pitch.
Things were looking promising for the Hammers in the bottom half. Doubles by Jason Varitek and Placido Polanco pulled San Jose within 8-7 with one away. But after a walk to Bobby Kielty came the biggest play of the season. Woody Williams got Adam Everett to rap a ground ball to second, and Bret Boone started a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
It was a disappointing end to a great season for Eshbaugh and the Hammers, who were making a franchise-first playoff appearance after a 93-69 regular season.
