EDMONTON -- Can the Raleigh-Durham Bulls hit? Can the Pope take a massive you-know-what in the you-know-where?
Andrew E.'s Bulls hammered Mark Mulder and four Dragon relievers for 21 hits as the Bulls demolished Alberta 12-1 in Game One to draw first advantage in the Season Nine Finals.
This one was over almost before the Fat Lady finished singing "Oh, Canada." Mike Lieberthal doubled to lead off the game, scoring three batters later when Carlos Delgado came through with a two-out ribbie single. Vlad Guerrero then took Mulder deep to left-center, and it was clear where this game was heading.
Lieberthal, Delgado, and Guerrero all had four hits in the game to lead the assault, with Barry Bonds and A-Rod joining Vlad in the long-ball column. Mulder, an outstanding 16-5 in the regular season, headed to the showers in the second with a butt-ugly pitching line: Nine ]hits and six earned runs in 1 2/3 innings.
The defending champion Dragons will hope to restore order when they send Kevin Millwood to the hill in Game Two against the Bulls' Josh Beckett.

Instead, Stephon Lentz's boys cowboyed up for a three-run rally in the bottom half and then rode home on the impeccable bullpen work of Tony Armas and Eric Gagne to win 7-5 and even the series at one game apiece.
Dragons starter Kevin Millwood had the powerful R-D lineup under control until things fell apart with two out in the fifth. Mike Lieberthal's two-run jack to center cut Alberta's lead to 4-3, and after A-Rod and Delgado reached base, Vlad Guerrero clubbed a two-run double to put R-D in the lead.
No problemo for Alberta. Bobby Abreu's two-out ribbie single in the bottom half knotted the score, and two more scored when Scott Rolen bashed a single to right and Guerrero uncorked a wild throw to third, allowing Abreu to scoot home with an unearned run.
Armas and Gagne were lights out in relief, giving up a combined zero hits and two walks in in four innings of work.
The series now moves to the Bullpen in North Carolina, where Joel Pineiro and Roy Oswalt will hook up in Game Three.

He was struggling, in the midst of a huge jam of his own making, and he was on the verge of blowing the game.
But with the bases loaded and no one out, Gagne cowboyed up to whiff Victor Martinez and Mike Lieberthal before retiring Barry Bonds on a routine fly to preserve the Dragons' 5-3 win. Alberta now leads the series 2-1.
With the game tied at 2-2 through six, the Dragons broke through with a pair in the seventh. Scott Rolen and Ramon Hernandez hit back-to-back doubles for the lead run, and Roy Oswalt -- who had already tossed six solid innings -- hit a ribbie single to make it a two-run lead. Alberta added another in the eighth on an Alex Cintron solo homer.
With Gagne coming in from the pen, things looked good for Lentz and his Alberta club going into the home half of the ninth. But Gagne looked strangely human, giving up consecutive singles to Guerrero, Young, and Loretta to start the inning. He then proceeded to walk pinch-hitter Cliff Floyd, and R-D had the tying and winning runs on base with no outs.
After a conference on the mound, Gagne was suddenly his old self. After the two strikeouts, Bonds strode to the plate for a classic matchup with the Bulls' home crowd going crazy. Hopes rose for a moment when Bonds lifted one high to left, but it was just a can of corn for Richard Hidalgo, and Alberta had the game and the series lead.

Marlon Byrd and Prior delivered RBI singles in the second as R-D jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Mulder, who the Bulls bombed in Game One. After R-D added three more to lead 5-0, Alberta made a game of it when Josh Phelps hit a three-run bomb in the seventh. But the Bulls put it away with four in the eighth, Cliff Floyd helping out with a three-run pinch homer.
Lasting just four innings in this one, Mulder is 0-2 in the series with a 17.47 ERA. Prior improved to 2-0 in the finals.
The pitching plot now thickens as the series heads into a pivotal Game Five at the Bullpen. Alberta is coming back with Game Two starter Kevin Millwood on three days' rest. With Bulls' Game Two starter Beckett reportedly too fatigued to work, GM Andrew E. has not revealed his pitching plans for tomorrow. Most speculation centers around Kip Wells, the ostensible No. 4 man, who was skipped over for Game Four.

After Barry Bonds knotted the score with a three-run blast off Erasmo Ramirez, Dmitri Young ended it in the 10th with an RBI single up the middle off Tony Armas.
Millwood was in command through seven, giving up no runs and just five hits. The Dragon hitters, meanwhile, had scored him a single run in the first and a pair in the fourth on Josh Phelps' two-run single.
Millwood, working on three days' rest, was beginning to show signs of fatigue, so Alberta made the call to the bullpen starting the home half of the mistake. It didn't take long for the Bulls to make them pay. A walk and a single sent Mike MacDougal to the showers, and Bonds welcomed Ramirez to the game with a bomb to right, tying the score at 3-3.
With Contreras, Isringhausen, and Urbina keeping the Alberta bats quiet in the late innings, the Bulls got busy bottom 10. With two on and no one out, Young hit a sharp grounder up the middle. Carlos Delgado rounded third and headed for home, just beating the throw from Carlos Beltran.
The series now moves back to Alberta, with Vicente Padilla expected to start for the Dragons. R-D's pitching plans were not known at press time.

Alberta's victory set up a classic Game Seven showdown for the Season Nine championship, with Mark Prior and Roy Oswalt tentatively slated to duel in a match for all the marbles.
Held in check through four, Alberta got it going in the fifth, with Alex Cintron delivering a ribbie single and scoring the tying run the next play on Vlad Guerrero's wild throw following Carlos Beltran's single.
The Dragons then took the lead for good the next frame. Carlos Pena's double in the corner plated two to make it 5-3, and Pena then came around to score on Cintron's single.
Alberta proceeded to pour it on in the seventh and eighth. Beltran, who has been a monster this post-season, ended up with four hits to lead a 17-hit Dragon attack.

Four innings -- and no runs later -- Andrew E.'s Bulls had their second ABA championship in hand.
Ugie Urbina, Francisco Rodriguez, and Jason Isringhausen pitched four clutch frames of one-hit ball to key R-D's 5-4 win in Game Seven, closing out the gritty Dragons in the final game.
"What a job by those three," a jubilant Andrew E. said in the champagne-drenched Bulls locker room. "Forget about Bonds, A-Rod, Vlad and all those big-name sluggers of mine. It was these unheralded guys out out of the pen who made the difference."
Trailing 3-2, Raleigh-Durham took the lead for good in the fourth. Dmitri Young tripled with one out and scored on Mark Loretta's base hit. Loretta later came around to score on Mike Lieberthal's two-out single, staking the Bulls to a 4-3 lead.
Loretta's ribbie single the next inning gave R-D provided some cushion, but the lead was back to one in no time when Alberta took advantage of a Mark Prior error to score in the bottom half, Bobby Abreu coming through with a ribbie double.
That would end the scoring, but the Bulls did have to sweat it out in the eighth when a walk and a single put two on with no one out. After a visit from Lieberthal, F-Rod got it together to get Scott Rolen on a harmless fly and Ramon Hernandez on a called third strike. With Angel Berroa stepping in to pinch hit, Rodriguez uncorked a wild pitch, and suddenly the tying and winning runs were in scoring position.
Then came the play of the season for the R-D Bulls. Berroa hit a high hopper just to the right of Bulls' first-sacker Carlos Delgado, and the ball appeared headed into right-field for a hit. But Loretta ranged far to his left and speared the ball, flipping a toss to Rodriguez at first to nip Berroa by an eyelash.
Isringhausen made short work of Alberta in the ninth, and the party was on.
By winning the championship of Season Nine, Andrew E. and the Bulls claimed the second title in franchise history in this, their fourth straight trip to the finals.
Congratulations to Andrew E. and the Raleigh-Durham Bulls, your Season Nine champions!
