It is Game Six and these barnstorming All Stars don.t even know what city they.re in... do they ever? The motley crew that makes up the brain-trust of these teams, however, are beginning to feel the strain of the long season and this multi-national, multi-cultural event that is the ABA 9th Annual All Star contest. After too many flights, too many airline meals, and too many wine spritzers, Tom Dymek found himself making a trade with Hudson that didn.t take full advantage of his colleague. "What was I thinking?" Dymek screamed smacking his hand to his forehead. Edelsberg threatened to leave the tour citing 'principles'.
The Aarons are on the verge of whining. Oops did I say whining? I meant winning. I would never accuse the Aarons of whining in writing. The Aarons are on the verge of taking home the Braggers Trophy. Jason Schmidt takes the mound for his second start after throroughly dominating the Mayses the first time around. Addressing Schmidt.s performance at the press conference the naturally erudite Cullen took the mic to say, "One more time, baby." Opposing Schmidt for the Mayses will be Barry Zito. Zito was excellent in his first start, but got zero support from his fellow Mayses.
So, will it be the a six game series? Or, will the Mayses live to fight another day?
It was win or go home for the Mayses. It was Zito trying to duplicate his game two effort and the rest trying not to duplicate theirs. The Mayses got things going against Schmidt right from the start. Tejada singled with one out and after Balok struck out Albert Pujoles took Schmidt into the Korean night for a 2-0 lead. Zito didn't come out sharo in the bottom of the first as he surrendered a single to Ichiro and then walked the fearsome Reyes. Sheffield singled home Ichiro to cut the Mayses lead in half. Schmidt settled down in the next three frames at one point striking out Soriano-Helton-Ordonez-Posada in a row. It was Ordonez's second strikeout. Zito, on the other hand was struggling- too many pitches, and not enough strikes. In the third inning Sheffield doubled after Delgado singled and the pesky Brett Boone tied the score with a sacrifice fly. That would be all for Zito as the Mayses would then go with his SJ staffmate Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo helped himself with a single in the fifth and scored when Garrett Anderson went long on Schmidt to give the Mayses a 4-2 lead. In the sixth inning the one-man wrecking crew that is Garry Sheffield proved that Arroyo is human and again cut the Mayses lead in half with his own shot into the Korean night. However, that was all the runs the Aarons would get and Tejada added an insurance home run to even the series at three games apiece.
The Koreans definitely got a more interesting game than the French, but who really cares about the French.
Game seven will decide it all with the Aarons truning to Pineiro and the Mayses pinning their hopes on Colon. Both pitchers pitched very well in game three.
